Bechtel Corp. claimed the top spot on the San Francisco Business Times’ annual ranking of the largest private companies in the Bay Area. With $37.9 billion in 2012 revenue, the San Francisco engineering and construction firm raked in five times more money than the No. 2 company on the list, Delta Dental of California.
A diverse assortment of businesses made this year’s list, which ranked the top 100 companies on 2012 revenue. Construction companies and law firms founded in the 19th Century vied with technology startups born as recently as 2009. Nearly half (45 companies) count San Francisco as their headquarters. The East Bay is the next biggest home base (30 companies), followed by the peninsula (22 companies) and Marin (3).
Our research this year unearthed 36 new companies that didn’t make last year’s list. In total, the top 100 companies represent more than $92 billion in revenue and 30,000 local employees.
The San Francisco Business Times publishes industry rankings in each issue of the paper and reprints them at the end of the year for our annual Book of Lists. These lists are unique and authoritative sources of Bay Area business news.
